LegalLens explains legal documents in plain English. To do that, it has to read the document you upload, and documents like leases and job offers often include personal details. This page explains what we collect, what we do with it, and who else sees it.

The short version

  • You don't need an account. We never ask for your name, email, or phone number.
  • We save the text of your document, and anything you tell us about your situation, so your analysis link keeps working.
  • We send that text to OpenAI to write the analysis. OpenAI doesn't use it to train its AI.
  • We don't sell your information, and the site doesn't use cookies, analytics, or ad trackers.

What we collect

The document you upload. Our server pulls the text out of your file. We save that text and the file's name. We don't keep the original file.

What you tell us about your situation. If you fill in the "Anything we should know?" box, we save what you write, because the analysis uses it.

Your analysis. We save the explanations and summary LegalLens writes for your document.

Basic technical information. Like every website, our server sees your IP address (a number that identifies your internet connection) and basic details about your browser. We use your IP address only to stop any one person from overloading LegalLens. We don't save it in our database, and we forget it within minutes, though our hosting provider may keep it in its own logs. Our own logs record which part of the site was used, whether it worked, and how long it took. They never include your document or its analysis.

We don't ask for your name, email address, phone number, or payment details, and there are no accounts. Your document may still contain personal details, like your name and address on a lease. See tips for keeping your information safe below.

How we use it

  • To analyze your document and show you the results.
  • To keep LegalLens working and secure, like fixing errors and stopping abuse.

We don't use your document to build a profile of you, to advertise to you, or to train AI models. People at LegalLens don't read your documents, except when it's needed to fix a technical problem, look into abuse, or follow the law.

Who else sees it

A few companies help us run LegalLens. They handle your information only to provide their service to us.

  • OpenAI writes the analysis. We send it the text of your document and anything you told us about your situation. Under OpenAI's terms for businesses, it doesn't use this information to train its models, and it usually keeps it for up to 30 days to check for misuse. Read how OpenAI handles it.
  • Railway hosts our website and the database where your document and analysis are saved.
  • Cloudflare runs our domain name, and sends visitors from www.legallens.ai to legallens.ai.

We may also share information when the law requires it, for example to answer a valid court order. If LegalLens is ever sold or merged into another company, the information we hold would go to the new owner, who would have to follow this policy.

We don't sell your information or share it with advertisers.

These companies are based in the United States, so your information may be stored and processed there, even if you live somewhere else, like Canada.

Ads, cookies, and tracking

LegalLens doesn't use cookies, analytics tools, or ad trackers.

We advertise on Google. If you came here by clicking one of our ads, Google knows about that click, under Google's own privacy policy. Our site doesn't include Google's tracking code, so Google doesn't see what you do on LegalLens.

Your browser does save a little information that LegalLens needs to work, mainly a secret key for each document you upload (more on that below). It stays on your device and is only ever sent to LegalLens.

How your analysis stays private

Your analysis has its own web address, but the address alone won't open it. It only opens in the browser you uploaded from, which holds the document's secret key. We save a scrambled version of that key, not the key itself. Your connection to LegalLens is encrypted (HTTPS).

This means:

  • If you clear your browser's data, or switch to a different phone or computer, you won't be able to open the analysis again.
  • Anyone using the same browser on the same device can open it. On a shared or public computer, clear the browser's data when you're done.

We work to keep your information safe, but no website can promise perfect security.

How long we keep it

We keep your document, what you told us, and your analysis so your link keeps working. Right now there's no way to delete a document yourself, so leave out details you don't want saved (see the tips below). We may delete old documents at any time.

Tips for keeping your information safe

LegalLens only needs the terms of the agreement to explain it. Before you upload, you can remove details it doesn't need, like:

  • Social Security, Social Insurance, or other ID numbers
  • Bank account or credit card numbers
  • Dates of birth

Drawing a black box over text in a PDF usually leaves the text underneath, where LegalLens (and anyone else) can still read it. Delete the text instead, for example in a Word copy of the document.

Children

LegalLens is for adults. It isn't meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we'll post the new version on this page and update the date at the top.
